How the diameter is calculated
Full tire diameter follows D = d + 2·W·(H/100), where d is the rim diameter in mm (inches × 25.4), W is section width, and H is the aspect ratio. Example: 205/55 R16 = 631.9 mm; 215/55 R16 = 642.9 mm. Difference: +11 mm, i.e. +1.7% — within tolerance.
The calculator compares two tires at once and shows the deviation in both units: millimetres (for arch clearance checks) and percent (for the ±3% verdict and speedometer error).
Standards behind the math — ISO 4000, ETRTO, DOT
Tire dimensions in this calculator follow ISO 4000-1 / ISO 4000-2 — the international standard for passenger-car tire designation, nominal section width, aspect ratio and rim-diameter coding. The same math underlies the ETRTO Standards Manual (Europe), TRA Year Book (U.S.) and JATMA Year Book (Japan). The ±3% outer-diameter tolerance we apply is the industry-practice ceiling beyond which speedometer, ABS/ESP and fender-clearance begin to fail in predictable ways.
On the vehicle side, tire identification is tied to the DOT code — a U.S. Department of Transportation marking required by 49 CFR §571.139. The last four digits encode week and year of manufacture (e.g. «2324» = week 23 of 2024). The EU equivalent is the «E-mark» under ECE Regulation 30. Any tire sold in a regulated market carries one or both.
Important: the ±3% reference is the size specified by the vehicle manufacturer — not whatever is currently fitted. If the factory spec is 205/55 R16, then 225/55 R16 (+5.7%) is already out of tolerance, even if the previous owner drove on that size.
Russia-specific note
For users in Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union: the ±3% limit is legally binding, not just industry practice. It is codified in EAEU Technical Regulation TR CU 018/2011 (Annex 8) and mirrored in the Russian Traffic Rules (Resolution 1090) list of defects prohibiting operation. Traffic police may cross-check the fitted size against the door-jamb sticker. The numbers in this calculator are the same — the legal weight differs by jurisdiction.
Speedometer error
The speedometer reads shaft angular velocity and multiplies by wheel circumference programmed in the ECU. A bigger diameter reduces the reading: at real 100 km/h, +1.7% diameter shows 98.3 km/h. A smaller diameter over-reads and leads to speed-camera fines.
When size swaps are safe
- Deviation up to ±1% — fully equivalent swap, no need to re-check pressure.
- ±1…±2% — safe, but verify arch clearance at full suspension travel.
- ±2…±3% — borderline: formally allowed but loaded cars may rub.
- Above ±3% — not recommended: speedometer error, bearing wear, ABS/ESP issues.
Disk fitment for a new size
Rim width must match tire width. Per the ETRTO Standards Manual, tire width in mm should be 1.0 to 1.3 of rim width. For 215/55 R16 the range is 6.0–7.5J, optimum 6.5–7.0J. The same ratios appear in the TRA Year Book (U.S.). Use the second mode of the calculator — it lists every compatible size from the database.
Winter vs summer
For winter, a narrower tire with the same outer diameter often wins — better contact with snow and less slush aquaplaning. A typical downsize: from 215/55 R16 to 205/60 R16 (near-identical diameter, +0.7%).
FAQ
Can I fit bigger tires than factory-recommended?
Yes, as long as outer-diameter deviation stays within ±3% of factory. Always check that the tire does not touch the fender liner at full suspension travel and full steering lock.
Do I need to reflash the speedometer?
For ±2–3% deviation — not required. When you switch to a bigger rim diameter (R17 instead of R15), reflash is typically needed or error becomes 5–8%.
Does the new size affect fuel economy?
Yes, but modestly. A wider tire adds 2–5% to consumption from bigger contact patch and mass. A taller profile reduces highway consumption but increases city consumption.
